Description
Uses and Indications:
Codeine is prescribed for the relief of mild to moderate pain when other options—such as paracetamol or non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs)—have proven ineffective. In addition to its pain-relieving properties, it is also used to treat dry, irritating coughs and manage episodes of diarrhoea.
How It Works:
Codeine acts on the central nervous system by binding to µ-opioid receptors, much like morphine, though it is less potent. This interaction elevates the pain threshold and diminishes the sensation of pain. As with other opioids, it has depressant effects on the CNS, which may lead to drowsiness, sedation, and respiratory depression.
